Google I/O 2023: Android Keynote
From new gadgets and apps to cutting-edge AI and security features, Google has revealed what’s next for its products and services. They also shared their concerns about user safety and data protection and introduced some upcoming solutions for building a connected environment.
Here are some of the Android-specific highlights and surprises from the event.
Lock Screen
Android 14 brings in a new level of personalization and style. The upcoming version of Android lets you tailor your lock screens with handy shortcuts and elegant clocks, as well as switch to a sleek monochrome mode (white, black, gray) for the whole phone. Plus, you will have the option to create your own wallpapers using AI, emojis, or your own photos for a unique and lively look.
Wallpapers
New wallpaper features in Android 14 make it easier than ever to personalize your device and express yourself.
Emoji wallpapers let you mix and match up to 14 emojis to create a playful and personalized wallpaper. You can adjust the grid size and the emoji spacing to suit your style. Cinematic wallpapers let you transform any photo into a 3D masterpiece with motion effects. You can choose from different effects and angles to make your photo come alive.
Privacy and Security in Android 14
Health Connect
Starting with Android 14, Health Connect gets system upgrades through Google Play without a separate download. This means your apps can work smoothly with Health Connect on Android 14+ devices. You can also control privacy restrictions for Health Connect from the system settings menu.
Data Sharing Updates
You may now obtain additional details and manage the app’s data access in a new area of the location runtime permission dialogue that highlights instances in which an app shares location data with outside parties.
Secure Full-Screen Intent Notifications
In Android 14, full-screen intent notifications will only be granted to apps that provide critical functions like phone calls or alarms. This is intended to limit the number of apps that get this permission by default. Apps that already have permission from previous versions will keep it, but you can change it anytime. This way, you can easily focus on high-priority notifications and manage their app permissions.
Updates in Android Studio
Android Studio Bot
Android Studio Hedgehog Canary Build introduces Studio Bot, your coding companion for Android development. Studio Bot can answer your development questions in a chat-like interface within Android Studio. It uses artificial intelligence and natural language processing, so you can ask questions in simple English and get helpful answers
App Quality Insights with Android Vitals
Android Studio Hedgehog lets you access major crash reports from Android Vitals, powered by Google Play, within the IDE. You can also get useful information from SDK providers, such as comments and suggestions, to help you quickly fix errors caused by SDKs in your app.
