Illumination’s animated family-friendly fowl feature is just about passable

I’m still playing catch-up with a couple of new releases I’ve not quite got to yet. Here’s another: the latest Illumination animated feature, duck tale Migration. These fowl don’t prove foul, but nor is this a must-see or even above average. Rather, it’s an entirely adequate time-filler for parents of small children desperate for something family-friendly at their local multiplex.

Of course, their best choice is Wonka, which is still going strong and raking it in at the box office. However, assuming they’ve seen that already, and in the absence of any other decent alternatives (God forbid anyone consider going to see Wish, which I suspect was AI-generated), Migration is an acceptable top-of-the-bill filler, with the added bonus of being preceded by splendidly silly Minions short, Mooned, by far the best thing about the programme.

The feature is less guffaw-inducing, but still has its amusing moments. The plot concerns a mallard duck family, with the father, Mack (Kumail Nanjiani) afraid of predators, adventure, and going anywhere beyond the narrow confines of their pond. However, the mother, Pam (Elizabeth Banks) and their children Dax (Caspar Jennings) and Gwen (Tresi Gazal), want to see the world. Inspired by other ducks…
