This week in SimPEG…

This week, SEOGI KANG, Rowan Cockett, Doug Oldenburg and myself submitted an abstract to the Airborne EM workshop on SimPEG and how it can be used to simulate and invert airborne EM data. We use a model of a conductive plate in a resistive half-space. In the first example, we ran a forward simulation and examining the fields and fluxes to explain what we observe in the data. From there, we performed three inversions. The first was a 1D inversion which gave the “pant-leg” structure typical of compact bodies in 1D inversions. The next inversion was a 2D voxel inversion, which did a better job fitting the data and nicely recovers the location and conductivity of the plate. The last inversion was a parametric inversion for a plate — it resolved the conductivity, top of the plate and horizontal extent of the plate. We suspect that to image the correct depth extent of the plate we will need to go to 3D. You can read the abstract and use the notebooks to explore the results on the simpeg-research repository.

In the meeting…

SEOGI KANG presented on the implementation of Induced Polarization within electromagnetics in SimPEG. We also discussed the structure of examples and moving towards more notebook-styled examples like the inversion of loop-loop EM data example.
