Flight deal tip: Be flexible
If you can wait to find a deal and then book a trip around the dates for the cheap, you are much more likely to pay less for flights. We know not everyone’s schedules can work this way, but the airlines know that certain times work better than others for most people. If you can break out of this schedule, you’ll win. Generally speaking, departing or arriving on a weekday instead of weekend is going to yield a lower fare price.
Flight deal tip: Avoid peak times
Flying at spring break, summer season, and around any major holiday is the most expensive. An example, a flight from Seattle to San Francisco on Memorial Day can cost $500 and up, while any other weekend in May can cost as little as $200. If your schedule permits, you can save a lot of money by traveling on alternate dates. If you must travel during a peak travel time, try to shift your dates by a day or two on either end to see if you can shave off a bit of the costly airfare.
Flight deal tip: Don’t wait to book if you find a great price
If you find a great deal, quickly check that it’s going to work for you and book it! The most amazing deals usually expire within a day, or sometimes even within hours. Luckily for you, the US government regulates that airlines let you cancel your flight booking within 24 hours of booking for most flights in the US. This regulation does not apply to non-US flights, so be careful with those. There are stipulations, but most airlines and online travel sites will let you cancel a flight up to 24 hours after you booked it. You can use this to your advantage to lock in a flight deal and then find other accommodations.
