SIMPLIFYING TECH: Hoodchat
It’s been awhile since I’ve gotten truly excited about an app. Maybe that’s because I’ve been busy in college or binge watching The Handmaid’s Tale but honestly I think that most of the recent apps I have checked out have been truly mundane. However, when I came across Hoodchat I was not only inspired to write this Medium post but also to share the app with my friends and to start engaging on their platform.
Hoodchat — A location-based app that connects you with people around you through different channels catered to your interests.
Currently, Hoodchat seems to have a small user base but I predict that it will rapidly expand in the next few months. When exploring the interface, I was surprised by how clean and attractive it was. The main page is composed of a colorful grid of different categories which you can choose to follow. Some of the ones that sparked by interest were:
#Networking
Find interesting people, talk about your passions and make connections.
#Photos
Share your pictures, interact with other photographers, get gigs.
#Funny
Post funny images, share memes, laugh.
#Food
Talk about local restaurants, share recommendations, post food porn.
#Party
Find out about the hottest bars, clubs, parties in your local area.
#Startups
Discover new local businesses, collaborate on projects, find coders, meet entrepreneurs.

If marketed correctly, I think Hoodchat has the potential to blow up. With the ability to create new channels and interact with those around you, Hoodchat could become a dedicated place for discovering your local area or even teleporting. (choosing a different location on the app) At one point Facebook served a similar purpose but more and more I have found that my Facebook has become increasingly oversaturated with content and hard to find what I’m really looking for. With Hoodchat’s channels and location services however, users will be able to focus their search in one app but in an organized manner to best meet their desires.
