SIMPLIFYING TECH: HQ Trivia

Two weeks ago, I started seeing a lot of people on my Twitter feed talking about their obsession with a new mobile app called HQ. After checking it out and downloading the mobile game, I instantly understood the hype. If you’ve seen people duck out of class or work and stare intensely at their phones around noon and dinner time, chances are they’ve also been lured into HQ’s live game show.

HQ TRIVIA:

A live trivia game show app with cash prizes. Users can play live every day as a contestant in multiplayer trivia games hosted by one of HQ’s acclaimed hosts.

In the past couple of days, I’ve seen the app’s popularity increase exponentially and even ran into another student in my dorm lounge at CMC trying to win a part of Sunday night’s $1,500 jackpot. We instantly looked at each other across the room and smiled as we tried to answer the questions, ultimately being eliminated after failing to answer the third question correctly.

Each game has 12 multiple choice questions that range in difficulty and subject area. If you get through the 12 questions without answering any incorrectly, you split the jackpot with the other winners. Once you earn $20 on the app, you can instantly cash out and transfer your winnings to PayPal.

Something about this app is incredibly exciting and innovative even though the concept is quite simple. The Verge described HQ as an app that “[combines] the classic game show elements of Who Wants to be a Millionaire? and Jeopardy! with the breakneck speed and scale of mobile gaming and live streaming technology.” (Verge)

The viral trivia game is incredibly fun to play and the concept is brilliant. Users are incentivized to share their referral code with their friends to earn extra lives to use during the live show. This strategy has resulted in many people sharing their links on social media and getting new players to join the game.

HQ also has the ability to offer prizes that are sponsored by marketers, partners and different brands. Since the game goes live twice a day at the same times, sponsors know that users will be engaged and attentive during the duration of the live game… Honestly, I can’t think of a better spot to place an ad or sponsored content than right in the middle of an intense game of live trivia.

The amount of users tuning in for the live games has been quite impressive and recently, live game shows have been cancelled due to servers being over capacity. Since the app is still new and exciting, users have put up with these technical difficulties. However, these need to be resolved to ensure the sustainability of this game.

There are so many possibilities for HQ to experiment with and that is ultimately going to be really exciting for the users. I can’t wait to see how HQ evolves and if it can continue to gain traction and satisfy its users. In the meantime, I will continue to tune in at 12 and 6 pm and try my luck at winning the jackpot!
