Simplilearn Review: Upskilling for Success in Data Science

Like many seasoned professionals, Priya Thomas began considering what new skills she could acquire to stand out among colleagues. Her MBA degree in finance, along with 10 years of experience in analytics positions, lead Priya to consider upskilling in data science. “With continuous evolvement in technology, I realized that it was time for an upskill,” Priya said. “I was also very keen on upskilling with an international university [like Purdue]… because I work in an MNC and a lot of MNCs are going into data science… so when you say that you are affiliated to a foreign university they recognize that name better than any other Indian name.”

Priya also took advantage of her family’s support, using Saturdays and Sundays to study while her husband cared for their children.
“The course was something I wanted to do and both me and my husband were on the same page which really helped make this transition.”
Stand Out and Make and Impact
Completing the PGP in Data Science gave Priya the new skills and confidence she needed to move her career forward. With masterclasses by Purdue faculty and IBM experts, she learned how to implement newer technologies and gain a competitive advantage in the workplace.
“I can see a change in the way I approach work because now I feel like I am having more refined conversations,” she said. “Upskilling has helped me add to my vocabulary at work which means that I am having more meaningful conversations with my superiors.”
Also, Priya credits upskilling for her new-found ability to make meaningful contributions to her company’s culture of innovation. The projects and capstones challenge students to implement skills in R, Python programming, machine learning algorithms, and data visualization with Tableau to solve real-world business challenges.
She explained that “The projects really helped with testing myself on the knowledge that I had gained. It being live was definitely an add-on, and I understand that the assessment criteria were also very rigorous… it gave me an opportunity to think outside of the box and explore beyond what was being taught.”
