I first discovered Stoicism two years ago, when I was learning more about morning routines, self-care and how we live our lives and how it affects us and our way of thinking. It turned out, a lot of what I had begun reading was grounded in Stoicism and Stoic philosophy.

What Is Stoicism?

If you were to google it, two names would come up for you, Tim Ferris and Ryan Holiday. It is Ferris where I first heard the term after listening to his podcast, following his blog and watching his talks on YouTube. It turns out, many of the entrepreneurs of the world follow the Stoic philosophy.

Stoicism is an ancient Greek philosophy of personal ethics, grounded in the ideals of logic, reasoning and its view on the world. It was founded by Zeno of Citium, a Phoenician merchant.

Put simply; it is a tool to help us in our thinking and actions in an unpredictable world that we can’t control. We can’t control the external events in our lives and trying to do so is what puts us in turmoil. Rather it is how we react that matters.

“When something happens in our lives, we decided what these things mean; we decided what the effect is.”
