Beginner’s Luck
Back in the olden days I was a dishwasher in the best restaurant in our small town. I had an entreprenuer spirit even back then, before Facebook and before the internet.
My babysitters brother was the chef and his little sister, my best friend, was also a dishwasher. And we got free dinner (hello minestrone soup), sometimes we got to eat pie and bread pudding, too. That’s when I learned about cold storage and speed racks and having pre-made salads. Later I married a chef — go figure — but that’s a different article.
So I quickly learned that it’s waaayyyy more fun in the front-of-the-house so I ended up hostessing. Part of being a hostess was the super early morning shift where I would load up a literal red wagon with pastry and take it to office buildings to sell pastry to the office workers. Looking back, I realize that was my entreprenuer-in-training. Those office workers loved seeing me and my wagon of goodies and sometimes would pre-order haha — so I had to get very organized with my limited space in order to deliver their pre-order. #itworked
From hostess I decided waitressing was way better, they have more fun, can move around more, make funny jokes, and get a lot of TIPS! So my manager agreed to train me as a waitress.
I had great success on my first solo waitressing night. The tips were BIG. My co-workers, of course they watch and teach all the time when you’re that young, they said, “That’s beginners luck, don’t always expect that kind of night.”
From there I went on to management then bartending and then event planning (all the way to the federal government) and my hospitality career continued to serve private families. #itspersonal It’s amazing what a growth mindset can get you if you TRUST and keep growing.
