  • I’ve recently discovered a fantastic site called learnprompting.org — which is full of resources about effectively communicating with AI.
learnprompting.org
  • Every tip here involves the simple principle of giving context to the AI. The more information you share, the better the answers you will get. Keep that in mind every time you interact with AI tools.

The more information you share, the better the answers you will get.

ChatGPT Prompting Tips

1. Give ChatGPT an Identity

  • When asking for advice or tips, tell the AI who he should act as to get better answers.
  • For example: Telling the AI to act as an “Expert fitness trainer” before asking for a weekly training routine will present you with a much more detailed and accurate training plan.

More examples:

  • “You are a copywriter with 20 years of experience in the health industry; what are three slogans I can use for my company “Health-me”?
  • “You are a professional financial advisor. You have helped wealthy individuals manage their complex investment portfolios for over 20 years. Write me an aggressive investing plan for 200K in savings.”

2. Establish a Framework

  • For more control over your output, let the AI know precisely what it should produce by setting boundaries. This includes the number of words in the answer, not using a particular word, or even responding in a specific tone.
  • For example:
”Summarize the above article in 200 words or less, replace the author’s name with my name, which is John, and also write it in a funny tone.”

3. Offer Examples

  • Sticking to the principle of “giving the AI context,” offering complete examples of your desired response should lead to an answer matching your expectation.
  • If you ask the AI for a formal message telling your boss you are sick and can’t come to work today, adding a template of this kind of message will help the AI form a structure and content similar (but different) to the template.
  • For example (telling your boss you are sick):
Asking for a message and offering a template

4. Problem-Solving? Use The Magic Phrase

  • This research paper by OpenAI researchers suggests that using the phrase “let’s think step by step” dramatically affects the model’s ability to solve problems accurately.
  • This phrase will also give a more detailed answer, showcasing how the model thinks and what it did to solve the problem.

*Update: As the AI models evolved, this kind of statement may be unnecessary as the model will already think in a “step by step” method.

5. Follow up

  • If you are not happy with a response, don’t quit. ChatGPT remembers everything through your conversation, and you can use additional prompts to refine, clarify or even upgrade any answer.
  • For example:
    1) Let’s say you asked ChatGPT to give you an outline for a new article about stocks.
    2) You feel like the outline is too short, so you ask the model to give you three additional points for the article.
    3) You might even ask ChatGPT to write whole paragraphs for some of these points.
  • Your communication with AI doesn’t end after a single prompt.

Midjourney Tips (Image Prompting)

6. Style Modifiers

  • Typing pyramid leaves big room for interpretation. But pyramid 3D render or pyramid made of glass gets you more accurate results.
  • Use the following examples to adjust your images to your aimed style.

photorealistic, by greg rutkowski, by christopher nolan, painting, digital painting, concept art, octane render, wide lens, 3D render, cinematic lighting, trending on ArtStation, trending on CGSociety, hyper realist, photo, natural light, film grain

7. Quality Boosters

  • Much like style boosters, quality boosters help you control the image’s quality. If the output is dull, you could add “extremely detailed” to your prompt to get a richer picture.
  • The same thing goes for everything related to how the image looks. Simply adding “4k or “beautiful” could be a game changer.
  • Use the following examples to adjust your images to your aimed quilty.

High resolution, 2K, 4K, 8K, clear, good lighting, detailed, extremely detailed, sharp focus, intricate, beautiful, realistic+++, complementary colors, high quality, hyper detailed, masterpiece, best quality, artstation, stunning

8. Repetition

  • To control the power of boosters and modifiers, use repetition.
  • Using the same statement more than once in a prompt can cause the AI to give more importance to that word in the generated output.

Conclusion

  • The world of AI is here to stay. Embrace it, or be left behind.
  • These tips are easy to implement; most people just don’t know them.
