My First Solo Trip as a 23 yo.

Little did I know, I had made my first friend in Hampi right there, right then.

I chose Hampi (South India) as the destination for my first solo trip.

Loitering around in Hampi triggered the sensations of strolling through an aloof village, but simultaneously, at home as well. The absence of a network means no notifications on your phone to distract you. This place compels you to unwind, spend time with yourself, and immerse in its natural beauty and rich heritage.

6:30 am. Waiting for the boat to get ready to cross the river.

I was by the riverbank, waiting for the boat that would take us across to Hippe Island. The cool morning air was still a novelty when a hesitant voice interrupted my thoughts.

“Do you know if this boat goes to the Hippe Island?”, he enquired timidly.

“It does, but I’m not sure when it will leave. Been waiting here for half an hour myself,” I replied, my tone edging on grumpy from the lack of sleep.

He looked out over the water, a slight smile forming as he took in the scene. “This view is really pretty, isn’t it?” he ventured, still sounding shy.

“Yes, it is,” I agreed, my irritation softening into a smile.

“May I have a seat?” His politeness made it impossible to refuse.

“Of course,” I gestured to the space beside me, welcoming him to join in the wait.

“I’m also fascinated by the lives these people lead,” I remarked, signaling toward the locals washing their clothes in the river at such an early hour.

“It’s quite traditional, no..? Reminds me of my childhood visits to the village,” he shared a nostalgic glint in his eye.

“I’ve never really lived in a village myself.”

“Dude, you should try it at least once.”

I nodded in agreement, my thoughts drifting to what living in a village might be like. Meanwhile, the early morning sky captivated me, with the sun weaving its light through the clouds — creating a perfect tapestry at 6:30 a.m.

“So, how has your trip been so far? When are you leaving?” I asked, eager to hear more about his travel experiences.

“It’s been beyond expectations… quite special, actually.” I noticed him folding his stripped blue handkerchief the third time after wiping his face just to get the symmetry right.

“Wow. That makes me excited for my stay here!”, I exclaimed.

“Wait.. but why special?” I pressed further.

“It’s special because it’s my first solo trip. My friends bailed at the last minute, which was frustrating, but I decided to go anyway. I booked my tickets and hopped on the bus with minimal planning. So far, it’s been rewarding.”

“Our stories are quite similar, you know.” I shared a sincere smile with him.

The boat was ready. We got up and started moving towards it.

“Ah, but I haven’t told you the best part yet. You’re going to make loads of new, interesting, and downright crazy friends here,” he called out, his voice trailing off as he tried to match my slower pace.

Little did I know, I had made my first friend in Hampi right there, right then.

Note to self after 4 days:

He was right! Hampi was unlike any place I had ever visited before. I can’t overstate how peaceful the place is. Being there felt like a journey back to simpler times. Did I mention the night sky yet? Never have I seen stars so vivid — it was as if they were speaking to me.

This place was so rejuvenating, full of interesting people in every corner.
The trip wouldn’t have been worthwhile if not for the amazing people I met and the friends I made. The past few days served as a testament to the beautiful fact that life, and everyone in it, is wonderful — if only we are ready to see the raw beauty within.
