Making the most out of meetings

If you are spending too much time in meetings, here are some thoughts on how we can all do better. :)

Before you accept any meeting invitation, consider these questions first.

Objective — What does a successful meeting look like?

Agenda — What are the discussion topics to achieve the objective?

People — Do we have the right people in the room to achieve the objective?

Most importantly, why should you attend?

  • What value are you expected to bring to the meeting?
  • What value can you derive from the meeting?

Lastly, instead of meeting in-person, why not just replace it with a phone call? :)

If you are an engineer or designer and are spending too much time in meetings, help your team understand the difference between maker’s time and manager’s time.

In GDS, our people are encouraged to be protective of their time. Spending time with users and building products is always time well spent. For everything else, use the guide above.

Be mindful of the opportunity cost of having pointless meetings.
