A joint announcement from coding communities to the world: Hacking Covid19

Calling All Data Scientists, Cryptographers, Smart Contract Developers, Cypherpunks, and Medical Professionals

SARS-COV-2 is spreading around the globe at a frighteningly rapid pace. This war continues to hold humanity hostage with fear and social isolation. COVID-19 is one of the greatest threats we have ever faced. But, as a technological species that has been undergoing a revolution with our abilities to wield artificial intelligence and the blockchain, we can extinguish this threat with the power of innovations that are self-adapting, borderless, decentralized, and defend us without permission.

Healthcare is ill-equipped for this biological threat and cannot scale fast enough to contain it. The fight against COVID-19 will take place outside of healthcare through the pairing of artificial intelligence and blockchain, utilizing globally connected machines with algorithms that can propagate and move faster than the virus. Our traditional ways of using research, trials, policies, and tried-and-true therapies are not fast enough and have not been able to slow the destruction of COVID-19. However, the most powerful human characteristics, which include awareness, foresight, compassion, and wisdom, can serve as advance warning for people yet to face the virus helping to guide major decision making. When these are scaled and decentralized, mankind will overcome any crisis, even a disease with no cure.

Who are we and what have we been working on?

Three technology companies — SingularityNET, Ocean Protocol and Nth Opinion — have joined efforts to utilize the latest technologies to outpace the spread of the virus.

SingularityNET, the company which built artificial intelligence for the human-like robot Sophia, is a decentralized AI marketplace and fosters the emergence of beneficial general intelligence. It is a full-stack AI solution powered by a decentralized protocol and led by founder Dr. Ben Goertzel. Ubiquitous throughout SingularityNET and throughout their team of engineers, scientists, researchers, marketers, and entrepreneurs, is a mission of decentralization and distributing AI to benefit everyone.

Ocean Protocol is a decentralized data exchange protocol to unlock data for AI, launched in 2017. Leveraging blockchain technology, Ocean Protocol connects data providers and consumers, allowing data to be shared while guaranteeing traceability, transparency, and trust for all stakeholders involved.

Nth Opinion is an AI health startup that originally launched, www.AskCo19.com, a platform for physicians and medical professionals on the frontlines to share information about this lethal viral pathogen that currently has no treatment. This communication tool allows doctors to share knowledge about COVID-19 to patients and other healthcare workers using their personal experiences from the ground. This website offers knowledge and insight for people around the world with the foresight to help others face the surge and onslaught of COVID-19 in the midst of the pandemic. What started out as an open-source hackathon in mid-March, quickly grew from a small team to a full grassroots non-profit of 200+ united volunteers from around the world working to realize this platform together.

What are we building together?

The grassroots open-source team behind AskCo19.com is excited to partner with SingularityNET to merge decentralized protocols, communication technologies, artificial intelligence, and machine learning.

True to their values of creating and scaling decentralized AI solutions, SingularityNET and Ocean Protocol are the lead organizers of the COVIDathon (read their Medium article). Hosted by DAIA, the Hackathon goes live on Tuesday, April 1. Learn more and join the Discord here.

DAIA’s COVIDathon currently has four tracks with various sub-themes to choose from as well as the option to submit an idea of your own. Sub-themes allow you to contribute directly to an existing project and work with medical and AI professionals. One of these sub-themes is dedicated just for AskCo19.com. Learn more about the AskCo19.com feature track here.

How you can get involved?

SingularityNET and Ocean Protocol will join AskCo19’s public Slack Workspace (join here). We invite everybody to participate, including:

  • Physicians
  • Nurse practitioners
  • Physician assistants
  • Blockchain developers
  • AI/ML engineers
  • Engineers
  • Full-stack developers
  • UX/UI developers
  • Data scientists
  • Project managers
  • Translators
  • Marketing and business specialists
  • Branding experts

If you are at all interested in this project, please get involved. When you join their Slack, there are instructions in our ‘Start Here’ guide in each channel. Your contributions are greatly appreciated and go directly into our CI/CD for production. Our joint philosophy is to place this tool that you help code and design into the hands of physicians and users to make an immediate impact. In this pandemic, every second counts. Hundreds to thousands of lives Lives depend on us. If the rate of growth continues and there is no cure, millions of lives depend on us. If you think we need it, please help us implement it.

Why are we doing this?

We believe this partnership enables real-time sharing of critical understanding and insights on how to overcome COVID-19 with treatments, techniques, therapies, and agents from people for people across the globe.

“When lives are at stake it doesn’t make sense to go through layers of policy and bureaucracy. We cannot fight this virus with research while waiting for a vaccine. We need to give passionate physicians a safe place where the risk is distributed so they can share real-time information with each other,” says Roger Ng, MD and co-founder of Nth Opinion.

This may be our only chance to win the war against an enemy we cannot see — one that moves faster than research. Using the power of AI and decentralizing technologies, we will match, adapt, and outpace the genetic algorithms of the virus.
