Disaster Resilience is something that you might not think about until you’re directly impacted by an emergency. However, effective and efficient disaster risk reduction, emergency response, and rehabilitation solutions may some day save your life or the life of someone you know.

“From 1994 to 2013, 218 million people were affected by natural disasters on average per annum.”

— UN International Strategy for Disaster Reduction

Take a look at these 4 exponential solutions from the SU Community that are aimed at saving lives and livelihoods, minimizing economic loss, and building resilience both globally and locally.

Advanced Sensors

GeoCosmo is leading the way in earthquake forecasting using advanced sensors and algorithms. Their system provides advanced warning up to 7 days which could give 2 billion people living in highly seismic regions a chance to protect themselves and their property.

Mobile Health Clinics

Refugee First Response Center (RFRC) turns shipping containers into mobile health clinics targeting Germany’s 1 million refugees. Their services create significant savings and simplified processes to connect refugees with doctors and interpreters to receive medical treatment.

Hybrid Electric Vehicles

Citizen Power Brigade developed a first response field power kit that turns hybrid electric vehicles (HEVs) into a source of mobile emergency power. One tank of gas can charge 8400 phones equating to 12 million minutes of life saving talk time for disaster survivors.

Digital Manufacturing

Field Ready uses networked hyperlocal digital manufacturing and other technologies to solve challenges facing humanitarian aid supply chains. Their approach leads to significant cost savings in logistics making post-disaster recovery and rebuilding more efficient and effective.
