Innovation (Powered by Sinofy) is an immersive series of talks exploring technology and business in the APAC region. Powered by Sinofy Group, Innovation is assembling some of the greatest minds of freelancers, startup founders, and multinational company executives. Speakers from all over the globe will dive into conversations on the current technology and business trends, VCs, legal landscapes and more. Discussions will help shape your understanding of Asian technology and business environments, as well as help foresee the opportunities within the region.

With her outstanding expertise and knowledge, we are delighted to welcome Sabrina Wang on board. Sabrina is a Global Community Builder, starting ventures in Germany and China. She is the founder of The StartupYard, a Pre-Accelerator Bootcamp to help early founders qualify for the best Accelerators in APAC. This is done by enabling ambitious early founders to learn from successful Entrepreneurs. Additionally, she builds communities within the Chinese Ecosystem as a Co-Director at Startup Grind Beijing.

During her time in Germany, Sabrina co-founded a furniture subscription platform, connecting suppliers and consumers, aiming to create a more sustainable living and reduce the environmental impact of furniture waste on our planet. She is truly a global citizen, graduating with her MBA from Peking University as well as speaking fluent German, English, and Chinese.

Sabrina is also the founder of Startupyard and its pre-accelerator Bootcamp. After attending startup events to expand her network and trying to gain practical knowledge, she found that it was difficult to connect with the speaker and to learn practical knowledge for her own startup. Her response was the pre-accelerator Bootcamp, an exclusive and super interactive opportunity to gain practical experience.

Taking experience from creating startups herself, she wanted to help others overcome challenges, make deep connections and see the value of helping each other and growing. She believes Sartupyard was also developed by her passion to connect people starting ventures of their own.

Within Innovation, Sabrina Wang will share her insights on the fundamentals a startup should have in order to succeed in China, its integration into the local ecosystem, and why it is so important.

Sabrina will start at the very basics and take you through step by step how to begin your business journey right from the beginning, as well as some insights about doing it in the Chinese ecosystem. Her presentation is for the ‘newbies’ in the industry who seek to grasp the fundamentals of building a startup and the intricacies of its integration in comprehensively diverse ecosystems as China.

We also managed to catch some of Sabrina’s insights to give a preview on what to expect at Innovation!

Given your broad experience in Germany and China, what advantages does the Chinese market bring to European companies that Europe is not able to provide?

There is constant innovation going on in China. The speed of change and innovation here is incredible and it pushes you to learn fast and adapt even faster. Thus, the Chinese market is more open to trying things that are new when it comes to technology and this attitude can be very beneficial for European companies in certain industries.

According to your experience, what do you think is the most common false assumption of Westerners about China’s startup environment?

The most common false assumption is that there is no interest or resources for international startups in the Chinese ecosystem. There has always been plenty of it, however, you just need to know where to look for it. Tip: look for connectors who are acting as a bridge between the West and East.

What fundamental assistance an accelerator could provide to future Western-Chinapreneurs? Why is it a crucial part of the ecosystem?

When entering a foreign market, make sure to be prepared. Do your homework and check the accelerators, startup/business programs, communities, or organizations that can provide you with networks, resources, and knowledge. Connect with them and you will discover that so many of them are willing to support you. In order to survive in a foreign market, such as China or APAC, you will need the right player from the ecosystem to guide you and help you integrate. My first advice here, look out for communities. They are a good connector and often a key player in the ecosystem and certainly a good starting point.

Sabrina’s outstanding proficiency, appetite, and commitment to the Asian market is a true testament to her knowledge and insights she will provide. We hope you can join us for China & SEA’s Startup Ecosystems — Decrypted on January 17th at 11AM GMT.
