“Stanley the Manly”

With a thin mustache and a rare yet genuine smile, Stanley Hudson is the kind of person that does not mince words, compliment out of politeness, nor succumb to really any societal formality that would require him to be anyone but himself. He is blunt, gruff, and grumpy, and never apologizes unless he thinks he is wrong, which he insinuates led to his first wife leaving.

Hudson, a larger man who slightly resembles Louis Armstrong minus the enthusiasm, has worked at the paper company Dunder Mifflin for many years, a job he bluntly dislikes. The job is seen as a necessary evil, in order to help pay for his daughter to go to Catholic school. His sources of happiness seem to be (in order): pretzels, getting out of work early, and an unhealthy addiction to crossword puzzles.

Often referred to as “Stanley the Manly” by his well meaning yet clueless boss, Hudson has a no-nonsense face, with thick jowls that could just as easily compliment you and then tear you down in the same breath. His large eyes convey an “I dare you” attitude, but when he smiles his face lights up like a child in a Christmas store.

In stark contrast to his abrasive exterior is his kind and even hardworking interior. As the office searched for a new manager, a temporary Manager named Andy Bernard defended Hudson by saying “did you know that [Stanley] has the most consistently high sales numbers in this office?” Also, after reuniting with his coworker Phyllis after he had left the office, he confessed that he missed seeing her.

Stanley Hudson generally has the attitude of a bitter geriatric, but he has an inner kindness that would not be visible unless one spent a good deal of time with him.
