SIU Alumni Association 2019 Textbook Award Recipient Essay
Why Southern Illinois University? This was the first question interviewers ask during scholarship weekend prior to me enrolling. The answer then was simple — opportunity.
Today, my answer is the same. I came to SIU with enough AP credits to be classified as a sophomore my first year. Since then I have continued to be impressed with the quality of the automotive program and the many opportunities to network with professionals in the field.
I have also had the opportunity to explore other interests, and have decided to dual major in automotive technology and agriculture production. These programs will open many doors for me in careers in automotive, diesel, manufacturing and agriculture areas.
While my interests may appear to be widely diverse, the skills that I learn in automotive also apply to many types of agricultural equipment. Hands-on knowledge of how equipment works can help with design and manufacturing changes for better productivity and efficiency.
In addition to fueling my interests, SIU is providing me opportunities for financial security. My experiences here will distinguish me within the candidate pool for interviews and allow me to pursue my dreams.
