SIU Alumni Association 2019 Textbook Award Recipient Essay
Southern Illinois University, while only having been in my life for a short time, has already impacted me in many ways.
The sense of generosity and community you feel just coming to visit on campus is awe inspiring. Everyone here is so welcoming and friendly, and it all is still somehow beyond my wildest dreams. From the moment I first stepped on campus, I began making memories I know I will cherish for the rest of my life.
For me, as a first generation student, beginning SIU felt like the start of a legacy and acted as such a hope for my family, not only for me, but maybe for my children and my grandchildren.
Applying for SIU was like a dream, and when I not only got accepted but received the University Excellence scholarship, I cried. It was like someone was acknowledging all the hard work my family and I put in throughout the years to get me where I am today.
I am proud to be a Saluki and from the LaPradd family, I thank you, SIU, for everything that you are.
