SIU Alumni Association 2019 Textbook Award Recipient Essay
College was something of a mystery to me all of my life. No one in my family attended, and I had no idea what I was getting myself into. However, Southern Illinois University Carbondale was better than anything I could have expected.
I was accepted into the Saluki Summer Bridge program this past year, and it was the beginning of everything. I was nervous and scared, but I learned the campus, met some of the greatest people in my life, and was introduced to a whole new world.
I come from a town without color and a place where it is like living in a bubble all the time. SIU has shown me diversity and inclusion and new opinions and insights. The summer program showed me this, of course, but my time at SIU has only continued to strengthen these new views.
I have met amazing people through my honors courses, my dorm, my classes, and more. I have joined clubs that actively make an impact on the world. SIU made me feel like I could make a difference, and taught me that scary situations and uncertainty can lead to greatness.
