~ barely-controlled chaos ~

It’s hardly the most famous version of the song, for my money, it’s the best. Lulu’s singing is easily the equal of Joe Cocker’s, and the band underneath her is just barely-controlled chaos as everyone just sort of seems to play whatever parts they feel like and it all happens to come together for her.

It’s amazing how well-arranged the music is underneath this with the horns fading in and out, the bass player probably stoned out of his gourd and just grooving along in his head with what he thinks is supposed to be going on, and the drummer just filling every possible line he can with an extra couple of beats and a dollop of cowbell.

This is the kind of late night jam you would get in a smoky club where everyone kind of knows the same song but they all know a slightly different version of it and it just all happens to blend together underneath a powerhouse set of vocals.

Rock on, Lulu ~

Thanks for checking out Six Degrees of Radio, and grooving along. If you don’t give this article the finger, or, y’know… a thumb, then I don’t know if you’re digging it or not.
