A Home Built on History
March Six Word Photo Story Challenge: “Freestyle”
Legacy built from a convict’s redemption.
George Oglesby King (my great-great- grandfather) first arrived in Western Australia as a convict (S/N 3090) after being charged with assault and battery in London. George received his Ticket of Leave in 1856, followed by a Conditional Pardon in 1859. In 1862 he began building this house, in Meadow Street, Guildford.
He lived in Meadow Street until he died in 1905, having had three wives and fathered eight children.
In 2019 George Oglesby King’s descendants gathered in Swan Districts Football Club Sponsors Lounge. Not everyone could make it, some people lived too far to travel, and others simply weren’t interested. Despite this, there was still over 300 people in the room.
Not a bad legacy for a convict.
Growing up I thought all things named “King” were named after my family, including Kings Park.
