A master photograph is intrinsically ambiguous.

What is the one thing that all art has in common? It is “Intrinsically ambiguous.” Remove the context and show them only the image. Make them use their imagination. A good photo makes people ask more questions than it answers. What is the story happening as the sun shines down on this young girl?

Who is the girl?

Where is she? Why is she standing in the water?

Is she in a rice paddy field?

What is she doing? Is she holding something or reaching for something?

What is she wearing? Is it a school uniform?

Why is her hair red?

What happened before and after this photo?

Why was this photo taken?

What camera was used? What edits were used?

….. Do you think you know any of the answers to these questions?

….. What questions do you have?

Backstory: Obviously, I took the photo. It is not a posed photo. It is one of about 20 I took on a walk one afternoon. The questions remain for you to think about.
