I’ve got a thing about trains.

“These times are too progressive. Everything has changed too fast. Railroads and telegraphs and kerosene and coal stoves — they’re good to have but the trouble is, folks get to depend on ‘em.”

— Laura Ingalls Wilder, The Long Winter

Laura Ingalls Wilder (1867–1957) longed for simpler times. Well, long before 2022, widespread intercity passenger railroads faded away, at least in the United States.

In college, I remember learning that railroads partly failed because their management believed they were in the railroad industry. They might have fared better if they considered themselves in the transportation industry.

I spotted these four old diesel locomotives in Eureka, California. With their paint long-faded, someone had spraypainted “Boogie” on the first engine.

Having built model railroads in the past, I’ve got a thing about trains, too. But these days, I keep it simple. Most of my interest in railroads involves photographing graffiti on locomotives, boxcars, and other rolling stock.

You can listen to Johnny Cash sing, “I’ve Got a Thing About Trains.” In it, he reminisces about the trains of the past.
