I thought today wouldn’t be fun!

The plight of me weighed heavy on my shoulders today. I was not in the mood for anything but sulking and furthering my self-induced pity party. The fact that 2023 up to that point was a shitty year, although great progress had been made on many fronts, I was in a mood.

On a bright sunny Saturday, my colleague asked me to go to a car show and shoot some gratis images. I was not looking forward to toting around a camera, playing the role of snapshot guy. I have been shooting imagery for 40 years, poor at the moment pessimistic me, just knew it would be a ho-hum day. Shame on me for not letting my curiosity out sooner. I was mistaken.

I rolled up and found myself in a sea of humanity. People of every shape, size, walks of life, gathering for a singular purpose. Sporting jeans, dresses, headbands, biker vests, holding dainty umbrellas and brandishing tattoos.

All mingling among a background of 1000s of classic cars. Everything under the sun Classic. As I wandered, snapping images, my core began to thaw. The heat wasn’t oppressive, I was changing as the day moved on. I began to feel my shoulders release. The camera wasn’t heavy. The hot sun felt good instead of burning.

My pace began to slow, a noticeable feeling, as I ducked in and out of the aisles. People, families, gathered under pop-ups sheltering from the scorch. All there for a singular purpose. To share their love of automobiles.

I started to look at the front of cars as faces. I shot both front and rear head on. They started to take on personality. It was really cool, slowly walking down each row capturing some that seemed to smile, some wearing a frown and others looking as though they were gulping air.

I finished out the day smiling. Later, I sat down at the computer and pulled up the day.

I strolled back through all the personalities and admired the feeling I felt.

It had been a long time since I let my guard down and let my curiosity lead the way. I will be doing more of this. It was so fun. I realized I miss that fun.

Thanks for taking the time to read my words. I have fun creating them.
