Color in the darkness

September Six Word Photo Story Challenge: “Shadows”

Light, shadow dance in colorful darkness.

The sheep tunnels are cool — a relief from the desert sun. My footsteps and voice echo along the shadowed corridor. Rays peek through openings in the ceiling, dancing on the colored walls in this otherwise dark place.

Plants grow in isolated sunshine, leaves poking through the grates. Litter clutters the concrete floor, and a shopping cart stands abandoned in the quiet afternoon.

The manmade cavern runs beneath the city for cowboys to push their herds safely from one place to another. Often, those without a home find shelter in the gloom. Right now, it’s empty. Silent.

Contemplative. Light and shadow flit across my eyes. The tunnel’s history, both dark and cheery, plays through my mind. Eerie and beautiful.
