Eight Billion Cans of SPAM and Counting

Nobody can escape the SPAM can.

Whether you love or hate the concoction, Spam is an iconic American brand. It is up there with Coca-Cola, McDonald’s, and Nike.

Spam and I share the same hometown: Austin, Minnesota. My father worked forty years at Hormel Foods, which produces the luncheon meat.

Hormel invented canned Spam in 1937. Since then, it has sold 8 billion cans in 44 countries.

Spam’s success in popular culture may surprise you. For example, Monty Python’s Broadway musical Spamalot won three Tony Awards in 2005, including Best Musical. Set in medieval England, its name is a portmanteau of Spam and Camalot.

If you have never tried Spam, you might like it with eggs for breakfast. Slice it and saute it in a frying pan alongside the eggs. Or, place a sauteed slice on a hamburger bun and top it with ketchup and mustard.

How is your relationship with Spam? Do you love or hate the stuff?

Thanks to Vidya Sury, Collecting Smiles, for cooking up this month’s challenge.

If you have yet to write a story for Six Word Photo Story Challenge, now is an excellent time. After all, food is something we all have in common.
