Low marine layers may bring fog.

Shortly after takeoff, my commercial flight flew near the coast where I live.

On this April day, the southeastern part of San Luis Obispo Bay was obscured by the typical marine layer that hovers there. What looks like smoke streaming out over the ocean is a cloud layer flowing into the area.

Reading the photograph from the lower left is the Olde Port beach, the Cal Poly pier with its marine lab, Avila Beach with its shorter pier, the hook of Pirates’ Cove, and Shell Beach. The marine layer hides Pismo Beach, Grover Beach, Oceano, and the Oceano Dunes.

If the marine layer stays high, it provides an overcast morning until the sun burns it away. If it comes in low, we experience fog.
