Finding Filipino heroes in San Francisco

I made an itinerary before I left Manila. To set foot in the streets of San Francisco named after Filipino heroes and to see a seven-story mural tucked in those streets before any other place.

And I made it.

It was not difficult to find. I’m quite familiar around Moscone Convention Center. Except for the scorching heat of October, that was unbearable.

The Lipi ni Lapulapu mural is on the wall of San Lorenzo Ruiz Center that is between Bonifacio and Lapulapu Streets.

Lipi ni Lapulapu is Tribe of Lapulapu in English. Lapulapu is regarded as the first national hero of the Philippines. Bonifacio is Andres Bonifacio, another hero. San Lorenzo Ruiz is a Filipino Saint.

The mural is like a history on a wall. In there, are heroes who fought for the country’s democracy, cultural heroes, medical professionals, the Pinoy masses and the first Filipino immigrants.

When I first read dried shrimp and fish in the mural, the first thing that came into my mind is the famous quote from Dr. Jose Rizal (present national hero).

In English, it goes like this, “A man who doesn’t love his own language is worse than an animal and a smelly fish.”

If you are familiar with our dried fish like tuyo, daing, dilis and tinapa ….you know how they smell. They perfectly fit the smelly fish.
