Hospital Waiting Room Selfie: Ear Today, Gone Tomorrow
Six Word Photo Story: Freestyle
It’s “out damn spot, out!” day.
Most people assume that having a transplant means I’m cured. It’s a nice pipe dream, but the reality is vastly different.
My lungs may be ‘new’ and perfect, but the rest of my body still has Cystic Fibrosis with all the complications that come with it — except for the lungs trying their hardest to kill me bit.
And the medications to stop my immune system from attacking my perfect new lungs come with their own problems. Skin cancer is a big one. I’ve been sprouting skin cancers for the last seven years. Most times, I can stop them in their tracks with Efudix, a chemotherapy cream.
But the one in my ear refused to play nicely and grew bigger.
I shouldn’t have been surprised. I had an SCC cut out of the same ear a few years ago, in a ‘slightly less’ tricky spot.
So today was plastic surgery day. I've lost some ear cartilage and had a skin graft. But in the grand scheme of things, it’s just a little hiccup.
My husbeast marked the occasion in his calendar like this Sandi — van Gogh, chop, chop. Isn’t he lucky I can see the funny side?
