Love when shared, is always enough.

In 2009 for Valentine’s Day, my parents chose to have a party on our terrace at home. The idea was that they’d invite all their friends (with families), and we would have a barbeque. Each family was to bring one item for the Barbeque. The final menu had honeyed spare ribs, spiced lamb chops, marinated fish (whole), butter garlic prawns, pork sausages, chicken sausages and chicken tikka with a whole host of accompaniments.

I remember this day vividly for two reasons.

First — the weather was the perfect amount of cold with winter on its way out, and then it rained.

Second — I was trying to be vegetarian and didn’t get to eat anything from the exhaustive menu; I ate my paneer tikka in grudging silence.

Our home was overflowing with an unprecedented number of heart-shaped balloons. All red. Obviously. It was a sight to behold. I also made this heart-shaped dartboard game that everyone — single, ready to mingle, happily unmarried, happily married or not, had to play. It was a loud, boisterous pin-the-heart in the centre game that had everyone in high spirits, especially those tanked up on other spirits. We laughed till our sides ached and ate till we could barely move.

Today when I think back to that day, some people are no longer happily married, some have passed on, some have moved to other cities and countries, some have drifted apart, and the children have grown up.

It makes me happy to think about that day because we were able to create our own little time capsule filled with love and hearts.
