I Am The King Of The (Lego) World
July Six Word Photo Story Challenge: “Cute Creatures”
From high, I survey my kingdom.
I spotted this proud little fella when I visited an art show at the Singapore Art Museum — Icelandic–Danish artist Olafur Eliasson’s Your Curious Journey.
Eliasson is known for his large, sculptural installations, which use elemental materials such as light, water, and air temperature to enhance the viewer’s experience and interaction with the works.
This work, in particular, is called the cubic structural evolution project, and it’s been travelling the world since 2004 with more than 900kg of white Legos. When the Legos arrive in a new country, the loose pieces are scattered all over a huge table.
People are invited to come to the table, sit down, and build whatever they want. The intention is to get visitors to collaborate on creating shared experiences and building shared worlds.
The museum staff on duty told me that she had witnessed skyscrapers rise and fall, cities grow, expand around the table, and then get broken apart, ambitious 3D initials of people’s names, and all kinds of mysterious, bizarre, formless shapes.
