He Made David Bowie Sound Great.

There is an area of Hull, a city in East Yorkshire, UK, which once had a reputation for street crime and anti-social behaviour. In the 1970s, at the height of the civil war in far-off Lebanon, the locals referred to it as Little Beirut.

I had cousins who grew up on this council housing estate and said they never had a problem living there. They never considered themselves poor, or badly done to. They received a good education at local schools, found employment, married, and prospered.

One young man from this estate who really prospered was guitarist Mick Ronson.

He started out in a band called The Rats, which in the late 1960s performed at pubs and other venues around Hull. His band even supported Top Ten groups like The Yardbirds, Pink Floyd, and The Move on the bill at the Skyline Ballroom, one of the city centre nightspots.

Ronson would become one of the greatest musical talents of his time. By forming a band, The Spiders From Mars, and teaming up with David Bowie, their influence changed the face of rock music. Glam Rock had arrived.
