Museums Offer Unsurpassed Lessons to People of All Ages
July Six Word Photo Story Challenge: “Cute Creatures”
Everything’s ducky about Rosie the Riveter
Several months ago, my daughter and I visited the American Heritage Museum in Hudson, MA, highlighting the United States military history from the Revolutionary War to the present. If you’re a history buff, the museum is a must-see event.
Being good tourists, we stopped at the gift shop after the museum tour. The shop sold some costly gifts, but a $5 trinket caught my eye.
Being a history buff, I knew what the little toy represented. My daughter did not, which surprised me. In my mind, everyone should know who Rosie the Riveter was. For that matter, who she still is. We have more women in trades who are armed with degrees in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) than ever before.
Rosie probably had no clue that STEM was a thing — before it was a thing — but she could sling a wrench like any man before her. The need for tanks, ships, planes, and munitions pulled millions of women out of the kitchen and into manufacturing plants.
