Six Word Photo Story Challenge: “About Me & Six”

Still flexing — some things never change!

As a kid, I watched my older brothers pump weights in their bedroom. I was awed by the dumbbells. When they weren’t watching, I’d steal their bible — a hardcover book with Arnold Schwarzenegger on the cover. I’d run back to my bedroom and flip through the pages, wondering how a human could be that humungous! I was both wowed and grossed out by the bulbous, grotesque, chiseled body parts. Why were their muscles so shiny?

I watched my brothers pumping iron and witnessed their chests and biceps get bigger and stronger over time. Sometimes, they’d teach me how to lift weights. I mimicked how they lifted the 20-pound+ dumbbells with each arm, except mine were 5 pounds each. I grunted and groaned the way they did, which made them laugh—and when I flexed my biceps and made funny faces, it cracked them up!

They told me I had good form. Fast-forward a few decades, and I’m still pumping 5-pound dumbbells and flexing to make people laugh! I can handle heavier weights, but hey — I don’t want to look like Arnold.
