My Happy Place Is Among Books

June Six Word Photo Story Challenge: “Black & White — Freestyle”

No other place I’d rather be!

I think one of the best things to happen in 1844 in Chennai, India, was the opening of Higginbotham, the beloved bookstore. Now, this ancient but beautifully maintained building stands tall, busy as ever with book lovers hanging around until they are literally pushed out by the staff at closing time.

My first visit to Higginbotham was back in the early 80s when I moved to Chennai and was in college studying for my B.Sc. Chennai’s heat is legendary, but not in a good way. It is unbelievably humid as it is a coastal city. I recall being shocked to discover that the streaks of white on the dark pink kurta I was wearing were salt from sweating. Phew!

The bookstore was pretty close to my college, and I loved visiting it. Fortunately for me, the British Library was also nearby. What can be better than losing oneself in the world of books? The air conditioning definitely helped.

I smile to think how I resolved to have the same black and white flooring when I built a house.
