Ancestors guide my needle and thread.
My grandmother taught me to machine sew when I was 13. The heavy dressmaking sheers in the picture were hers and have been with me for over 50 years. I recently got back to sewing, now for grandchildren.
Every shoosh, clunk, shoosh, clunk sound of the scissors cutting out a pattern reminds me of how I learned this craft. From ancestors, seamstresses in the NY garment district, off the boat, skilled with needle and thread to make their way in a new world.
This is me with them. Woven together across time.
