Find Soul-Stirring Beauty in Black Days
It was raining cats and dogs as soon as we arrived at the pumpkin patch last month.
For months, my friends and I elaborately planned to bring the kids out to the pumpkin patch to pick out our uniquely shaped Halloween squashes and take some long-awaited dives into the corn pit. I was psyched up to have a great day with my kids; I was unprepared for the pouring rain that ensued, just as I was achingly unprepared to leave my then-husband three years ago and make a new life with my kids.
The next photo in last month’s highlight reel is one of my fourteen-year-old son, standing six feet tall, soaking wet, and smiling on a mountain of hail bales.
October starts the dreaded back-and-forth holiday season my kids go through until the new year; it never gets easier. But with time comes maturity, resilience, and more happiness beaming from their sweet faces than I ever thought possible.
