O Romeo, Romeo, Wherefore Art Thou?

Stephen King rewrites Romeo and Juliet.

I visited the Jazz Museum in New Orleans yesterday. As I was walking toward the entrance, I looked up at the building and saw this super-skinny gal (or perhaps guy) lounging on a balcony.

Weirdly enough, my mind flew to the scene in Romeo and Juliet, where Juliet pines for her beloved on her balcony. “O Romeo, Romeo, wherefore art thou Romeo?”

(At the time, Romeo is hiding underneath Juliet’s window. He announces his presence, and the lovers make plans to marry.)

I studied R&J for a literature class in college.

My teacher, Miss K., adored the balcony scene. She savored every word and declaimed the dialogues passionately. Miss K. missed her true calling.

Our English lit. class attended a special screening of the 1968 film version of the play. A dewy Olivia Hussey portrayed Juliet. The first time she appeared in the film, a collective sigh went up from the audience.

Now I studied the bone-thin gal in New Orleans and thought: This is what Juliet and the balcony scene would look like if Stephen King rewrote R&J and Tim Burton (of Corpse Bride fame) directed the movie.

It would make for an edge-of-the-seat watch, don’t you think?
