Problem Suspended!

A six word photo story: freestyle

Where there’s a will, there’s a….

For years, residents of Barrio Ciénaga, an outlying area of Guánica in southern Puerto Rico, tired of traipsing around a narrow stretch of the bay to get to town. They got together and fashioned a wooden foot bridge — but rising waters kept washing it away. In 1956 the town mayor, Doña Esperanza Idrach, had a more permanent structure built.

Since then Puente Hamaca (Hammock Bridge) has withstood the rigors of time, thanks to generations of community members who have maintained and (most recently in 2007 and 2021) restored it.

Examples, perhaps, of both “It takes a village” and “Where there’s a will, there’s a way.”
