A rescue comforts our damaged hearts.

This is Jack—a rescue I adopted from Project POOCH kennels on the MacLaren Youth Correctional Facility campus. We ran a non-profit program there.

In the years that followed, Jack often went to the kennels for daycare and continued bonding with the incarcerated young men handlers. A young man would bring Jack to our building to join in the workshops as we finished out the days. More than one of the young men (arrested as juveniles) would say they weren’t arrested; they were rescued.

Once they began participating in our program of reformation and transformation or, even better, got a job as a handler with Project POOCH training and adopting out many rescues, our damaged hearts were comforted and healed.

Every day with this cute creature is a joy and a reminder of what is possible.

Thank you, Sandi Parsons, for this challenge topic and the memories it brings.
