Retro or Old: March Prompt

--

I am not old. I’m retro.

I took a photo of this antique Underwood manual typewriter for sale at a thrift store. My son had no idea what it was. I imagine him saying, “Who the heck would want to buy this old thing? It doesn’t do anything.”

I get it. You can’t surf the web with it. It doesn’t have a memory or a colorful screen. The only thing you can search for is the metal keys that you need to press damn hard so that the letters make an imprint on the paper. There’s no delete button. Once you type a letter — you’re committed. No turning back. Unless you start over and roll in a fresh sheet of paper.

“The quick brown fox jumped over the lazy dog.”

Do they still teach that sentence in “typing class?” Or am I that old? For the record, I learned to type on an electric typewriter, not a manual one. The “Electric” possessed a loud, dull, eerie hum whenever switched on. The pounding of the keys was louder. The typewriter had a backspace key, and errors could be corrected with the built-in “white out.”
