November Six Word Photo Story Challenge: “Building”
Rebuilt after destructive flames wreaked havoc
The Guildford Hotel (built between 1886 and 1889) suffered a catastrophic fire in 2008. The interior was gutted, and the iconic Belvedere tower was completely destroyed.
The owners vowed to rebuild it. It took eight years.
The exterior facade of the hotel was able to be saved. But, the scars of the fire remain. Inside, scorched roof beams and convict-made bricks are visible features.
Memory is a funny thing. After the fire, I would have put money on the Belvedere tower being situated on the right-hand side of the roof. When the Belvedere tower was under construction, I couldn’t believe they were installing it on the left-hand side. Photos prove that my memory is faulty.
