Five cities cluster along its beaches.

During the 1940s and ’50s, San Luis Obispo County was sparsely populated outside its namesake town and Paso Robles to the north. Ranchlands with cattle and farmlands with cool-season vegetables dotted the landscape.

But there were those beautiful beaches! Various developers saw dollar signs, and they rushed to lure wealthy farmers from California’s great central valley. Cooling ocean breezes offered relief from their long, hot summers.

Today, tightly clustered along this beautiful beach, visitors can enjoy Shell Beach, Pismo Beach, Grover Beach, Arroyo Grande, and Oceano.

Together, these towns are called the Five Cities. Each has its own vibe, and travelers from around the world come to enjoy the amenities of the hotels and spas of Pismo Beach. In addition, thousands of acres of agricultural land remain nearby to add to a pastoral sensibility.
