A sunflower laying on the ground and turning upwards with a drooping head in a dry, patchy garden area surrounded by other similarly wilted plants. The ground is sparsely covered with grass and dry leaves, bordered by concrete edging.

Fallen, yet rising: Sunflowers’ enduring bloom.

I am always amazed at how resilient sunflowers can be. They will always grow up towards the sun as best they can.

I completely overestimated my ability to work in my garden this year while I was having both my knees replaced, so my poor garden was neglected. I hadn’t gotten the additional compost I planned on putting in my new expanded sunflower bed, so most of it is a skinny layer of soil over a layer of weed fabric.

This one was too close to the edge of the original bed, so it had no support, and over it went when it got big enough. I could have staked it up like I did several others, but I didn’t get around to it.

So, now it lies on the ground, reaching up to the sun and blooming its heart out. At least the squirrels won’t have to climb too far to get their fresh sunflower seeds.

If you enjoyed this article, please consider buying me a coffee. It would be very much appreciated :)
