A familiar place, out of place.

The palm tree just did not fit in. The scale of the building was wrong. The copper roof was missing. Yet the Maple Leaf and the name connected me to my home city — in an instant.

The Hotel Vancouver is a historic landmark in The Best Place on Earth. The Châteauesque-styled building is considered one of Canada’s grand railway hotels. The hotel was part of a series of such structures built by the Canadian National Railway in the late-19th and early-20th centuries.

It was there early, completed in 1939, so it got a prime spot in the heart of downtown; steps away from the Financial District, later to the Vancouver Art Gallery and Robson Square. It named itself after the city that housed it.

It is somewhat regal in stature. Its ability to survive the test of time makes it seem important. It is not the fanciest or most impressive hotel in the city, but you feel its distinguished French chateau character upon entering.

It is not a place I frequently visit, but I have had some memorable experiences there. Crashing the Indy Gala party comes to mind, you may have read that story (link).
