What Happens When A Dog Meets Her Doppelgänger

February Six Word Photo Story Challenge: “Statues”

Which is dog, which is statue?

She was my muse for life.

Some don’t understand the human-animal connection. They may even utter ignorance, such as “It’s only a dog.” This is their loss.

But those lucky enough to have experienced an ethereal bond with another soul, without relying on words or scrambling around for areas of commonality, will get it.

Whether we take human or animal form is irrespective. What matters is the entwining of spirits—a fusing of hearts.

January saw the sixth anniversary of Princess Jasper’s passing. She’s almost been gone as long as she was here. Her presence helped me navigate my life. Her passing instigated my own Dark Night of the Soul.

I was not her owner. She belonged to herself.

I was merely her “kahu”, a Hawaiian term for those who are the guardian, caregiver, or caretaker of another.

Even in death, Jasper reminds me how to live: with enthusiasm, taking joy from the simple things, embracing the wind on my face and running for fun.

Love shapeshifts when the physical form of our affection is no longer with us. But it remains a deep unwavering love, just expressed in different ways.

I’m doing my best to live like Princess Jasper.

Thanks for reading. Connect with me here.
