A Sweet That Makes Me Nostalgic.

The foodie in me is always looking forward to the winter months. It is during winter that good quality red carrots are available in Bangalore. One of the main ingredients for making gajar ka halwa (carrot pudding).

I am not a fitness enthusiast, but I have perfected balancing healthy eating with a few indulgences. My all-time favourite is the delectable gajar ka halwa.

Gajar ka halwa is made from grated carrots, milk, sugar, cardamom, and khoya, garnished with nuts.

It’s festival time in India, another reason I indulge in special desserts.

Today is Lohri and Makar Sankranti, an important festival celebrated across India. It marks the end of the winter solstice and commemorates the rabi crop’s harvest.

This vibrant festival is known by different names in different states in India, but the underlying emotion is the same. It is also called the harvest festival in north India.

Each state in India celebrates this festival in its own traditional way and has a selection of sweet treats to enjoy. Sesame seeds and jaggery are the common ingredients used in making sweets during this festival.

Flying kites is an important tradition of this festival. In Gujarat, where I spent my growing years, they even have an International Kite Flying festival around this time of the year. The sky is painted with hues of colourful kites.

Thank you, Sandi Parsons, for this wonderful January prompt.
