My shots look better in color.

I just returned from a trip to Portugal with my best camera and plenty of spare batteries and memory cards. I was reviewing my photos when I took a break and read Mary’s June prompt. Black & White pictures only? I wasn’t quite ready for that.

As I sorted my photos, I had not considered converting a single one to black & white. Portugal is a country of vibrant colors. Without the color, Portugal is not Portugal. And, I suppose with rare exceptions, a black & white photo of Portugal cannot be said to depict Portugal.

I struggled through dozens of photos to find one that might be an exception to the rule that Portugal must be photographed in color. I finally found one that I thought came close. It is a shot of the rooftops taken from the cable car in Gaia, Portugal, right outside Porto. The cable car passes above a sea of orange tile roofs protecting houses that are all painted the same shade of tan.

The photograph captures a memorable view of Portugal in color. In black and white, the charm evaporates.

I’m unsure if I would identify my photo as a picture of Portugal without the color. I wonder if others agree with me.
