When Man Respects Nature

April Six Word Photo Story Challenge: “Graffiti & Street Art”

From waste to wealth equals health

This gorgeous wall made of broken ceramics is from the Nek Chand Rock Garden in Chandigarh, an eighteen-acre sculpture garden and a beloved tourist spot. Built by Nek Chand Saini, a self-taught Indian artist, the rock garden is a one-man show by an individual who cares about the environment.

Nek Chand was a government official who began creating the rock garden during his spare time, secretly collecting materials from demolition sites around the city and recycling them. His work was illegal, but he hid it for eighteen years. By the time it was discovered, it was a 13-acre complex with interlinked courtyards, filled with hundreds of pottery-covered concrete sculptures of dancers, musicians, and animals.

Today, thousands visit the rock garden. We spent a happy four hours marveling at the beauty of peaceful surroundings, enjoying waterfalls, tableaus, and the ubiquitous monkeys and pigeons. Imagine if every city created one like this! What a wonderful way to deal with waste!

Oh, there’s a camel ride, a toy train, and lots of refreshment booths to keep visitors happy. I took a thousand photos!
