I call my husband every time.

Yesterday

An earthquake measuring 4.8 on the Richter Scale quietly roared through Manhattan.

The shaking rolled up my legs and overwhelmed me with a terrible unease. I felt powerless.

Thoughts of Taiwan's biggest earthquake in 25 years, which had struck two days before, rushed my mind. That devastating quake had claimed the lives of nine people and left more than 900 injured.

Oh dear, is this the moment I die?

The thought of my passing caused me to stop and call my husband.

Him — he was the only person I thought to call.

“Do you feel this‽ It’s an earthquake. Oh my God, oh my God,” I said and clutched my chest, looking at the buildings around me quiver*.

Flashback

As I write this morning, I reflect on my husband being the one I would call when I thought death was imminent.

Thirty-two years ago, I was at home alone in Brooklyn, New York. The cheap pot I inherited from my father when he died burst into flames. The smoke filled my studio apartment, triggering the building’s…
